NCT trail White Earth 2026/06/13
Map of the trail I took, Going from the Green water trail head to the Flooded Wood campsite.
The trailhead! well not actually. I made the mistake of going down this way ( South ) instead of north because I'm a moron
The actual direction I wanted to go in was tucked away a bit.
After hiking a bit you cross Highway 35 and go into another trail head, this one already seemed far less maintained.
There were quite a few of these boardwalks which were by far the best part of the hike, withholding a few broken boards.
This is still the trail. It got claustrophobic pretty quick, not to mention the ticks.
There were also numerous downed trees. This one was easy enough to get over, but at some point it almost felt malicious the number of obstacles in the trail there were.
A birch Forrest, like in Minecraft!!!!
Yeah this is still the trail. The number of ticks on me were crazy. I'm grateful for my Patagonia pants and shirt that I soaked in Permethrin. I think I only got bit by one tick on the hike.
There were a good number of flowers and dragonflies around which was a nice break from the ticks.
There were some pretty tall red oaks as well.
Made it to the campsite! If you look back at the map there's a sort of cruel C turn that adds a good hunk of hiking to the trip. I was dying to set up camp and eat. Right as I walked in I got attacked by some sort of prairie chicken. It ran right up on me at 90 miles an hour screeching and flapping it's wings. I screamed like a girl and flailed my trekking poles around which got it to retreat. It came back for a second run with it's neck puffed up but I had collected myself at that point and told it to fuck off. It seemed to walk off deflated.
I had some freeze dried beef stew for dinner. Complimented by some freeze dried cookie dough. I was pretty beat so I watched the sunset and then went to bed. I brought along a new inflatable sleeping pad instead of the old foam one, which was an improvement for side sleeping.
I never sleep well when camping but the Chicken came back and was investigating my tent. I tried telling it to fuck off again and played some owl sounds but the girl was too hard headed. I think she had some chicks around which might explain it.
This log was a bitch to get over. Just high enough that hurdling is a bit painful, and you can't really go around.
Honestly an okay Hike, I prefer Sheyenne due to the lack of trees blocking the path although this one didn't have any horse poop to avoid and the trees provide a nice environment. This is for one leg of the hike which took me about three hours.
If you made it this far you deserve a photo of me in my dweeby hat. It did help a bit with the bugs, I could hear them trying to fly into my ears only to be defeated by God's strongest polyester.
